Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing

“If you begin to understand what you are without trying to change it, then what you are undergoes a transformation” J.Krishnamurti

EMDR works with the natural healing ability of your brain and body and can bring about relief from distressing symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, nervousness, anger, intrusive thoughts, feeling triggered, flashbacks. We will discuss a particular disturbing memory. Eye movements, similar to those during REM sleep, will be created and involves following the therapist’s finger moving backwards and forwards across your visual field or an online moving dot. The eye movements are in brief sets and between each set you will be invited to report on the experiences you’ve noticed. The focus is on gently and effectively processing memories as you experience thoughts, images and emotions. The experiences tend to alter with repeated sets of eye movements. People often notice that memories seem to lose the painful intensity and become a neutral memory of the past.

This technique is mostly used in treating trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) although has been effective in helping with anxiety, phobias and chronic pain.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) has a evidence of success for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment, which is can be seen on the NICE website. As a treatment approach, EMDR is increasingly being used very effectively with a wide range of other mental health problems. Whilst there is no quick fix for issues rooted in complex trauma, EMDR can be effective in reducing distressing symptoms and restoring clients back into a state of wellness.
