Addiction
“It is impossible to understand addiction without asking what relief the addict finds, or hopes to find, in the addictive behaviour” Gabor Matè.
Addiction is complex. It’s psychological, physical and behavioural and it’s an illness; addiction can emerge in many forms. The addictions we work with vary from substances, like alcohol, prescription and over-the-counter medication, illicit drugs, as well as behavioural addictions such as, sex, relationships, gambling, video gaming, food, work and more. In fact, it’s the addictive traits and underlying issues that we treat. The substance or behaviour is merely a personal manifestation of an unhealthy relationship that results in negative impacts on the individual and close relationships. The consequences of addiction spread widely: family, friendships, work or education, health, values and principles, finances. It’s all pervasive!
“ To simultaneously want and not want something, is perfectly normal”
